Are You Smart & Well Formed?

Congratulations! You made it through the first week of January and now you’re ready for the month to be over, right? Anecdotal evidence suggests the second week of January, although it is not the week of Blue Monday, is the time when a lot of people start to lose motivation to act on the changes they promised themselves and the goals they set. The New Year good intentions start to slide downhill along with your hopes and dreams, while your mood continues to get bleaker than the weather. You know how it is…weeks go by, you do nothing, you think about how you really need to do this and that but you still don’t bother. Then you leave it so long you say to yourself it’s not worth it, if you were going to do it you’d have done it by now along with all the other crap stories you keep using to justify your inaction.
Before you hit the ‘F**k It’ button, I have some absolutely fantastic news for you…I’m here to be the biggest kick up the butt in goal and outcome setting you have ever experienced. Allow me to motivate you back to refocusing on your goals and setting real intention to all the things you said you wanted. You will soon be feeling excited about your life and on route to your spectacular transformation. You already know that setting goals provides you with direction, gives you a clearer focus on what you want and what is important to you. Setting clear and concise goals boosts motivation and puts you in the driver seat of your life. If that isn’t enough awesomeness for you, the overwhelming personal satisfaction you feel when you achieve your outcomes makes following the frameworks I will share with you a no brainer. Get ready to be inspired and to change your stories forever!
When I am goal setting for myself and with clients, I always take a two-step approach using Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques. Goals and outcomes are stated in the present to activate and effectively reprogram your Unconscious Mind (UCM) to achieve your most desired outcome every time. Your UCM is such an almighty force, in fact it is probably your most valuable SuperPower Tool. Many people underestimate the significance of the UCM in their life and as a result they miss opportunities to completely reinvent, shape and transform their lives for the better. Your UCM will always produce exceptional results for you so long as you tell it directly and precisely (and I mean in real specific detail…teeny weeny wincey detail) what you want. We often believe our brains are working against us, not realising our UCM is our best friend and will do anything we ask it to, so long as we ask in the right way of course! Using S.M.A.R.T goal setting and Well Formed Outcomes, you connect and speak directly to your UCM. By using the questions I will give you, your UCM will understand and respond by giving you everything you have asked for.
Compelling goals are always so much more motivating and exciting than regular goals. I mean seriously, who actually gets inspired by goals like I’m going to lose weight, I’m going to quit smoking/drinking/blah, blah, blah. I’ve given up just writing that! The way I set my outcomes ignites all my senses and if I’m not grinning away to myself like a weirdo when I’m finished, my goals aren’t big enough, crazy enough or fun enough! I start by making sure my goal meets the S.M.A.R.T criteria. Using this I feel the most incredible sense of motivation, I feel the excitement start to build and then ideas are literally pinging all over the place – which is exactly why I need these questions. Next, I turn my S.M.A.R.T goal in to a Well Formed Outcome. Now, this is where is gets really mind blowing. Well Formed Outcomes are sensory based and must be stated in the positive, exactly how you want you it. This is the holy grail of direction for your UCM to follow. Imagine how amazing it will feel when you know with absolute clarity and certainty what you want and what you will do to achieve it. Not only that, you then get to ramp it up to something even more astounding and phenomenal. Using both techniques together creates a powerful and unstoppable force…You!
What I am about to share with you is an essential SuperPower to consistently set and achieve incredible goals and be 100% responsible for them. Give yourself uninterrupted time, make yourself a cuppa and reset. Something this important must never be rushed or half arsed.
S.M.A.R.T Goals must meet the following criteria:-
Specific – And by this I mean really specific. Vague goals like “I want a new job” are not welcome here. Get to the nitty gritty of what it is you really want. It may help to break it down further by considering the following questions: Who else needs to be involved? What obstacles are there? What resources do I need? Why do I want to achieve this goal? Go ahead, go wild!
Measurable – You need to be able to monitor your progress to keep on track to reach your goal. You will want to ask yourself: How do I know if I have reached my goal? What is the indicator of my progress? What will I see, hear, feel when I achieve my goal?
Achievable – The focus here is on how important a goal is to you and what you can do to achieve it. The more you get down in to the finer details, the more likely you are succeed at anything you set intention to. It may help to start small at first and then increase the scope of your goal with every achievement.
Realistic – Your goal could have an impact on family, friends and even the universe as a whole along with consequences to yourself. Is it ecologically realistic to achieve this goal?
Timed – This is essential otherwise you are just floating around, should-ing on yourself and getting nowhere. Set yourself a deadline and stick to it. Use time to keep the goal in focus and see it as a personal challenge. Also feel what it will be like as you celebrate your success of achievement. Cue happy dance.
Well Formed Outcomes must meet the following conditions:-
Stated In The Positive - What specifically do you want?
Specify Present Situation – Where are you now in relation to the outcome?
Specify Outcome – What will you see, hear and feel when you’ve achieved this?
Specify Evidence Procedure – How will you know when you’ve achieved this?
Is It Congruently Desirable? – What will this outcome get you or allow you to do?
Is It Self-Initiated & Self Maintained – Is it only for you?
Is It Appropriately Contextualised - Where, when, how and with who do you want to achieve this?
What Resources Are Needed? - What do you have now and what do you need to get to your outcome? Have you ever had this before? Do you know anyone who has? Can you act as if you have already achieved this?
Is It Ecological? - For what purpose do you want this?
What will you gain or lose if you have it?
What will happen when you get it?
What won’t happen when you get it?
What will happen if you don’t get it?
What won’t happen if you don’t get it?
Notice how differently you feel about the goal now, how real it is and how invincible you will be to achieve it. Start now by stating the one thing you can do in the next 24 hours that will move you one step closer towards your desired outcome.
